拉鐵摩爾以長城為標志，對中國歷史邊疆(滿洲、蒙古、新疆、西藏) 展開歷史地理比較研究。 以草原、綠洲、農業等人文地理概念為范疇，對中國北方邊疆區域地理生產方式、經濟政治交 往的相互性因素進行宏觀考察。提出中國歷史是草原社會與農業社會的兩種秩序相互循環的歷史理論。拉鐵摩爾的研究恰好反映出，中國作為統一的多民族國家在歷史發展中形成你中有我，我中有你，各民族相互離不開的歷史關系。這是中國多民族國家的歷史法理。20世紀中葉起，中國進入東部(海洋)與西部( 陸地)區域間的新地理循環，以構建中國的工業化。
